Guide - 4 SEO Traits To Avoid

Updated: Jan 24, 2021

Sir Tim Berners-Lee
Sir Tim Berners-Lee

Tim Berners-Lee is the father of the internet. His idea was first launched to the public in 1983, by 1990 the internet we know began to take grass roots. 30 years later we have the internet we know today. Over those years we have learnt more and made the internet a better place, learning what went well and what has gone terribly wrong.

In 1964 Jacky Sears hit 185mph on the M1. This act caused British motorways to have a speed limit and laws put in place to punish those who choose to break the law. Cause and effect. This applies to the internet. Google has invested a lot of time creating laws which are there for the benefit of all users and if you break them you are reprimanded. Let’s take a look how you can stay on the right side of Google.

Writing Content

Original Content

It is too easy to just pop onto a competitor’s website, see how they’ve done it and copy it for yourself. How many times can you re-write the same sentence? Well you need to try. All sites are indexed by Google giving them a time and date when that content was launched. If they find the same content on your site, they will check the dates to see who came first. If it wasn’t you, down you go.

How do you do it differently?

Say my business sells baskets the same as my competitor. How do you re-write that? Consider what makes your business better, do you offer more colours? Do you have a returns policy? Can you buy them online and instore?

Example:

50L Woven Basket

This English made hand woven basket carries up to a 50L capacity which is great for a full laundry load. In store we offer 2 colour options which are also available online. If you want to change your mind, we offer a 14 day change of mind guarantee with this product, swap instore or via post.

Keywords For Web

Keywords Stuffing

Meta data was something search engines were able to read in the code of your website which gave searchers an idea of what your website is about. Due to keyword stuffing, the act of putting way too many keywords in the meta data, Google skims over this and reads your sites content instead. Not to say these don’t still work but not the same way it used to.

How do you do it differently?

You have multiple pages to work with? Place your key words into your content. Your customers have searched a term to find your website, make sure that term is in your content.

Example:

User search: Video Production Bournemouth

Content: Blades Media offers professional video production in Bournemouth and Poole for businesses looking to showcase their products or services.

backlink building

Buying Backlinks

Consider Backlinks like word of mouth. The more links, the more people recommend you. The more authoritative the site, the more valuable the link. To get many links at once you can buy them. This is highly frowned upon and can result in your website being banned from Google!

How do you do it differently?

Do you spend money with a company? Go on the forums? Write a blog? All these can be a great place to get started. Many companies offer listings for their preferred customers. Forums let you place a link on your profile and for a small sponsorship fee, let you post a link in posts. Blogs can be a great way to add content to your site and links.

Not finishing what you have started

In 1989 in a corn field Kevin Costner heard “If you build it, they will come”. Well just because you have built it doesn’t mean Google will come to play ball! Your website needs to be optimised. Ask yourself this…

Does my website work on my tablet or mobile?

Does my website load fast?

Do all my pages work?

Do all my links, link?

Your website needs to be finished. Just putting some basic content and a contact page on is not enough.

How do you do it differently?

If you have built your own website undertaking this may be a little tricky as you need some advanced knowledge, especially with mobile optimization. If your website was built for you, we suggest contacting your web designer to create next steps.
